Winshuttle: Train and Gain

Winshuttle SAP Transactions

SAP CEO Bill McDermott estimates that 76% of the world’s transactions run on SAP – totalling $39 trillion in global business1. With so many transactions and supporting data, it is important for companies running SAP to focus on how their data and financial transactions are managed. In a data-driven world, the most successful companies will be the companies able to control the inputs that drive their business. This need has spawned a number of tools to help organizations deal with today’s data needs.

One of the most popular tools in this arena is Winshuttle Studio. Winshuttle Studio empowers business users to take control of their data without requiring ABAP knowledge. Studio provides the tools for users to build scripts that carry out SAP transactions, automating massive and repetitive tasks that were previously ‘keyed in’ by users or managed through ABAP programs that are expensive to maintain. Studio also allows users to build queries to extract data and generate reports. Both the data upload scripts and the query extracts are developed by business users, not ABAP developers, and then stored in a central location for reuse.

Let’s say you have made the decision to invest in Winshuttle. Now you are looking to maximize your ROI – but how can you get the most out of the tool?

Here are some key points to keep in mind once you’ve decided to use Winshuttle Studio.

Winshuttle Training

1. Why Train?

Whether you are new to Winshuttle or upgrading to Version 11, training provides a complete understanding of the Winshuttle Studio modules (Transaction, Query and Direct). Training will also expose you to the many advanced features in Studio and how those tools can be applied to your specific business case.

When you sign up for training, you get access to free training licenses  which valid for up to a week after training. Developer and Runner licenses can be purchased as required after the free trial period.

2. Plan your Training

Once you have signed up for the training sessions, identify what you wish to achieve from the training. Start with identifying the users who will use Winshuttle as Developers and/or Runners. These are the users with the authorizations in SAP to run the transactions.

This is also a good time to identify the key transactions you will be using Winshuttle for. You could create scripts for these transactions during your training workshop. Identifying these ‘transaction streams’ will help you build meaningful templates to make your processes complete and repeatable.

Finally, block time on your calendar for training so you are not disturbed during the sessions.

Remember the 6-P formula: “Proper Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance”.

3. Post-Training

Once training is complete, it is now time to put what you’ve learned into practice. This is a good time to gather requirements from key users to identify the transactions and reporting needs to develop scripts.  As you develop and deploy scripts and queries, you will come across scenarios that you may need additional help with. You can get help easily using one of the options below.

Winshuttle User GroupYou will also benefit by joining the Winshuttle User Group (WUG) which is a community of active Winshuttle users who exchange ideas, help solve problems and learn from each other.

4. Deployment

Once you have developed and tested the scripts/queries, publish (embed) the scripts into Excel and distribute the scripts to the users (Runners).  Your business will quickly see the benefits of using Winshuttle in time savings and consistent, repeatable processing.

5. Ask the question: How could I do this with Winshuttle?

One of our most successful Winshuttle customers continually asks the question: “How could I meet this business requirement with Winshuttle?”. They may not always choose to use Winshuttle as their final solution, but asking the question forces them to consider all of their available options when business requirements arise. This has resulted in some interesting uses and strong solutions that would not have been achieved without simply asking the question.
