Big Data is as much about technology and innovation as it is about the data itself. The idea of an enterprise data warehouse being a single repository of important information is dying.
Let’s continue with the discussion on the Gartner blog with the concept of Infonomics.
Embrace the concept of Infonomics: Infonomics is the economic theory of information as a new asset class, and the discipline of accounting for, managing and deploying information just as any other asset. (Source: Gartner)
The Principles of Infonomics are outlined in the picture below:
Gartner asks organizations how they would like to get started on Big Data. The answer is typically - it is about new skills, new technologies and would definitely start with the data they already possess. They would perform analytics, identify new customer segmentations, or a new type of process utilizing the data, to get the best out of the operational data they already have. This is one approach; however, there is more internal data that is available within an organization that may not be as obvious. It is called the Dark Data, or data that has never been dealt with.
Big Data is as much about technology and innovation as it is about the data itself. The idea of an enterprise data warehouse being a single repository of important information is dying. It is not sustainable and will go away. This does not imply that enterprise data warehouses will cease to physically exist. However, it will not be a single source of info. To elaborate further, the idea of downloading Twitter in the data warehouse to do some kind of analysis, is ridiculous, instead the data will live where it is being created by the concept of logical data warehousing. A logical data warehouse provides a centralized view of data where the data is actually distributed. This is the future of big data driven by information architecture for most organizations. Gartner sees several new roles emerging for the 21st century infocentric organization.
- Chief Data Officer
- Chief Digital Officer
- Chief Analytics Officer
- Data Scientist
- Information Strategist
- Information Architect
- Information Product Manager
- Information Asset Manager
- Data Steward
- Data Custodian
Conclusion: It can be rightly said that the information is there, how it is to be managed is the art that the organizations should know to get the best out of the data they possess. Given below is a chart that illustrates simple steps for the management teams to get started on their Big Data journey.
