Discover some useful OBIEE tips from Kiran Bellam.

oracle obiee support
I have been working with OBIEE for a while now, and I ‘ve uncovered some tips that could be useful in your day to day responsibilities.  I’ve compiled a list of my Top 3 below.

TIP #1

Unrecognized patch ID while applying patch in BSU Tool and "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError”

Issue: #1

When you are trying to apply a patch in Solaris using BSU and you get the below error.

Encountered unrecognized patch ID: XXXX(ID based on patch)

Shown below are the patch files in the snapshot.

obiee patch

To resolve the issue simply change the name of the catalog xml file from the patch as described below.

Change from patch-catalog_24474 to patch-catalog.xml and try to apply the patch again using BSU tool.

Note: Patch directory needs to have 777 permissions

Issue: #2

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: GC overhead limit exceeded.

When you are applying the same patch and you will get the below “out of memory” error.

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: GC overhead limit exceeded
at java.util.Arrays.copyOf(
at java.lang.AbstractStringBuilder.expandCapacity(
at java.lang.AbstractStringBuilder.ensureCapacityInternal(
at java.lang.AbstractStringBuilder.append(
at java.lang.StringBuilder.append(
at java.lang.Class.getMethod(

To resolve the above issue, remove the Java path from file and re-apply the patch again.

OBIEE report error:

Catalog object schema validation failed in OBIEE 12c

  • Goto to report folder
  • Edit the report
  • Goto the Adavanced Tab
  • Copy the XML Code to the text editor

Some font values are not supported in OBIEE 12c which are available in Discoverer.

If the Discoverer report is done in the “Dialog” font and you are migrating the report from Discoverer to OBIEE with the same code, it will throw the below error in OBIEE 12c.

Datatype error: Type:InvalidDatatypeValueException,
Message: Value 'Dialog' is not in enumeration

Edit the XML code and remove the Parameter fontFamily="Dialog" from the Advanced tab and run the report.

If you want to display report with all Default font values in OBIEE just remove the below parameters in XML code:

<saw:displayFormat><saw:formatSpec suppress="default" interaction="default" backgroundColor="#FFFFFF" fontColor="#000000" fontStyle="regular" fontSize="11" fontEffects="none" hAlign="left" vAlign="top" fontFamily="Dialog"><saw:dataFormat xsi:type="saw:custom" customFormat="DD-MMM-YYYY"/></saw:formatSpec></saw:displayFormat>
